Your E-Mail Address & Spam

Solution We are sure that you have received spam e-mails before, sometimes they are funny, but they are a pain, and can be dangerous.

How do you deal with spam?

1 – Create a ‘temp’ address on Yahoo or Google and use it.

2 – NEVER give out your real e-mail address to any web site, use the temp address mentioned in #1 unless you trust the web site. Now, some web sites use your e-mail address (such as ours) to inform you of things, so make sure about giving out a ‘fake/temp’ e-mail address.

3 – Give out a ‘fake’ e-mail address to web sites. For example, a web site asks for your e-mail address, make one up, such as qwerty@aol.com.

4 – NEVER EVER click on the ‘unsubscribe’ link in the e-mails. This is an old trick spammers use to determine if they reached an active, live person. Click it and you will more than likely get even more spam.

5 – If you receive an e-mail and you want to see if it is a ‘real’ piece of e-mail, look at it via ‘Message Source’. Yahoo & Google do not have this, but MS Outlook/Outlook Express do. This shows a text only version of the e-mail. No HTML code runs at all or is shown, just the text. Some spam will contain HTML code that will attempt to run/do things on your computer.

6 – Blocking the sender is usually pointless. They will use another IP address/Name to send the e-mail. It is like a dog chasing it’s tail.

These simple steps will help keep spam down to a minimum!
